Sustainable Pearls

Responsibly sourced

We support responsible pearl farming, Cultured pearl farms are often located in areas with sensitive coral reef ecosystems. A thriving ecosystem offers pearl oysters the nutrients, water quality and shelter they need for healthy growth. It is key to high quality cultured pearls.

At Saunders & Pughe we stock a wide selection of high quality cultured pearl jewellery. Cultured salt-water pearls come from oysters and can take several years to form. Once harvested cultured pearls are graded according to size, shape, colour, lustre and purity.

Colours range from silvery white, light grey to black, deep green and bronze-brown to metallic peacock blue and warm aubergine shades.

We stock cultured pearls from German based company, Gellner. Established in 1967 this second generation business headed by Jorg Gellner shares our same values and commitment to responsible sourcing.

Gellner’s unique pearls come from world renowned suppliers such as Justin Hunter’s Fijian Pearls and Robert Wan’s beautiful Tahitian pearls. Both suppliers adhere to a strict environmental code of practice.

Our selection and stock continually changes according to availability, we enjoy selecting unique and rare pearls with high lustre and exquisite colours.

“A big part of the brand’s philosophy and day-to-day business practice is the protection and preservation of the natural environment – the source of J. Hunter’s astounding pearls. To ensure the nutrient rich bays stay pristine, the company adheres to a strict environmental code of practice, which has had the added benefit of increasing fish stocks for local communities, who rely on fisheries for food and income”.
